Abstract
In this study, in order to identify how the Narcissism affects on the interpersonal relationship stress in work place, 299 workers were surveyed by using NPI(narcissistic personality inventory) that measures overt narcissism, CNS(covert narcissism scale) that measures covert narcissism and Interpersonal relationship stress scale that measures the stress level among supervisors, subordinates, and peers. To summarize the conclusion, firstly, the covert narcissism has static effect on the interpersonal relationship stress among superiors, subordinates, and peers while overt narcissism doesn¡¯t. Secondly, out of sub-characters of covert narcissism, hypersensitivity /vulnerability showed as the highest stress factor to the peer to peer relationship. Social recognition desire gave negative effect on the peer-to-peer relationship stress, and goal instability gave positive effect on the stress from the relationship with boss. Out of sub-characters of overt narcissism, the privileged entitlement gave positive effect on stress with supervisor and peer relationship, but excellence gave a negative effect on the stress from the relationship with the subordinates. Thirdly, the surveyees are categorized into four groups of the covert narcissism, the overt narcissism, the low level of narcissism, and the coexisting of covert and overt narcissism group by the degrees of covertness and overtness after averaging out the score of the covert and overt narcissism and dividing into high and low part, and examined the difference amongst these four groups. As a result, the coexisting group experienced more stress from the relationship with supervisors and peers than the low level narcissism group. and the covert narcissism group experienced more stress from peer-to-peer relationship than the overt narcissism group. This research showed how the narcissistic character influences on the stress from interpersonal relationship, both vertical and horizontal in the competitive social environment, but also confirmed how the covert and overt narcissism give complex-dimensional influence on the relationship in each groups categorized by the degrees of covertness and overtness by verifying the difference among the groups. Additionally the research has significance for finding function and dysfunction of sub-characters of covert and overt narcissism.
